Creative Makers Workshops for May
It has been a busy but extremely exciting time getting the studio ready for this new adventure and I am really looking forward to May.
Here are the featured workshops for May 2013.

The first workshop is the pallet tray. An industrial classic.
For this workshop you will be selecting pieces of pallet wood that have already been dismantled and cut (but we'll give you a demo on the "how to" take apart and prep the wood). The maker will then sand and assemble the pieces, clamp and screw together. Custom wood transfers (or ink stamping) can be selected and added on before sealing.
The second workshop is the Vintage Cutting Boards.
The possibilities are endless when it comes to creating unique cutting boards. The wood used are domestic hardwood like, cherry, ash, maple and walnut. Get your sanding arm ready for this workshop and a keen eye for wood that has the look you want. It's the finishing touches you make for the handles and add-ons like leather wrapping, distressed edges or burn marks that will give it character all your own. Tools used in the workshop will be belt sanders, your hand armed with several grits of sandpaper, drill press and jigsaw. Once the boards are ready and wiped down you'll season them for food safe use.

The last workshop in May is the Concrete Hand Vessel.
Casted from gloves that have been shaped and fitted into the mold you want and then filled with concrete that you can colour with natural pigments. This workshop is a 2 night process. After pouring the mold the concrete needs several days to set before removing the gloves and sealing. If done too soon the hand could give you a finger...lol
The uses for this vessel are pretty endless. Bird feeder, bird bath, door stop...a little bit of everything, always being offered to you with love. I might just make a ton of these and disperse then around the house. I particularly like the toilet paper theme...mixed with a little "twilight". I couldn't resist. Although they are porous, a food grade sealant that we us on our finished concrete counter tops is used to seal them, so whole fruit or other dry food can be safely displayed and eaten.

The studio has been outfitted with work benches at counter height, with ample working space. There will be seating for each maker at their work bench, and you will be happy to know that although you will probably need to stand to maneuver yourself with your project, the benches have been designed...custom I might add...by Steve and moi, to have our legs fit comfortably under the counter and..yes, there is room for crossing your legs! It's all in the little details.
All needed safety wear will be provided like protective eye wear (don't worry I got the very swavey looking ones), gloves, dust masks if required and apron, although not wearing your fav. shirt or pants is advised. For each maker on arrival prior to getting creative, you will be asked to sign a liability form and as a group be walked through some safety instructions.
