History and approach

Studio50 officially launched in 2013 as husband and wife team Steve and Kim Prokopowich. Unofficially, the studio had been in the works for over 15 years as the pair designed and built their own home in Paris, Ontario as well as their own furniture and home accessories. Beginning a studio and seeing their designs come to life in other people’s homes was a natural progression.

The two designers bring different approaches to the making process; as an engineer, Steve leans toward mathematical precision, embracing principles like the golden mean. Kim’s intuitive approach finds inspiration in the world around her – in history, nature, every day rituals and endless possibilities. Together they combine aesthetic sensitivities and a natural understanding of how design can integrate with people’s lives to form a conceptual, livable, and authentic style.

Designs by Studio50 are often custom tailored and always made by hand so that each product reflects the unique materials it is made of. While aesthetically contemporary, Studio50 designs are built to be experienced, loved and used. Materials are always procured with sustainability and longevity in mind; wood is sourced locally, concrete is mixed using an intentionally green, lightweight formula, even their beeswax is sourced from nearby towns. As designers, Kim and Steve value both function and form, recognizing that their work serves many needs over time. Truly they would have it no other way and always strive for solutions that fit their client’s values and aspirations.

Furniture

Studio50 furniture designs encompass a sculptural simplicity, a focus on function and the user's interaction. We use domestic hardwoods finished with Livos, which enhances the natural colour and grain variation of each species. For pieces incorporating concrete, we use eco-friendly, low VOC stains, and food grade penetrating sealers.

Platform Coffee Table

The Platform Collection adopts square and rectangular profiles for use as entrance tables, coffee tables and accent tables, amongst others. Inspiration for this contemporary concrete, steel and walnut collection comes from historical pop-up performing stages. The concrete is cast in our “gaia” style which celebrates the rawness and beauty of earth. The perfection of this concrete comes from its imperfections. The steel is inset and discreet and the walnut base is finished with a natural Livos finish with a shadow effect under the substantial top.

CONCRETE PLANK collection

The table has represented a gathering place for thousands of years. The Concrete Plank Collection adopts an old world aesthetic coupled with clean, modern lines. Designed to be the centre of attention, the Concrete Plank Collection becomes a place to enjoy good company, good food or quiet reflection. This piece is created using unique hand-cast concrete planks and lightweight steel construction. Functional and durable, these tables can be used indoors or out. Baum Light

Inspired by the moon cresting above the trees and illuminating the crisp night sky, our latest sculptural piece, the baum light, embodies our fascination with merging the natural world with everyday function. Constructed of 3 solid walnut pieces, the baum light is fastened with mortise and tenon joinery. The raw pendant light, from the color cord company, is freely adjustable for variable hanging lengths and is nestled in a routered trench with a securing wooden wedge. It comes with a 15 ft. cord and is covered in a gray cloth and a gray metal socket cover. No two Baum Lights will ever be the same due to the natural one of a kind live edge boards.

Holz Mirror

Inspired by the beauty and simplicity of wood, the Holz Mirror is designed with four pieces of domestic hardwood seamlessly lap jointed and hand sculpted to the unique live edge profile. Each crafted piece offers the quiet reflection of the wonders of nature.

Concrete Housewares

Studio50 houseware designs encompass sculptural simplicity and focus on the user's interaction and function with each piece. Materials that offer durability and longevity with a twist of unassuming application are selected to create pieces that enhance the user’s experience, and become loved and well used in the home every day.

Rock Bottom Collection

Rock Bottom Vessel

The Rock Bottom Vessel marry the functionality of science-grade glass with the industrial ruggedness of concrete. Every concrete base is individually crafted using various colour and texture techniques nesting its own unique hand-blown glass container, creating a perfect union.

The 1000mL boiling flask can withstand both extreme hot and extreme cold liquids, safely containing soups, coffee, hot chocolate, tea, ice cold water, lemonade, or fun entertaining cocktails. It also holds an entire bottle of wine and acts as a fabulous decanter!

The concrete base both cradles and supports the glass flask, and serves as a warming or cooling plate. To keep liquids hot, place the concrete base into the oven at 200˚F for 25 minutes before using. Remove with caution! To make sure your beverages stay chilled, place the concrete base into the fridge or freezer. This creates a cold stone that will not melt or dilute your beverages.

The leather on the neck of the flask is hand wrapped and tucked. It is easily removable for washing and simple to re-apply. You to change things up depending on the season or your mood. Wrap it in red for the holidays! Or change it up to sisal twine in the summertime! The opportunities are endless.

Aroma Haus

This architecturally influenced aroma diffuser pairs our eco-formulated concrete and a walnut “chimney” accent with a water resistant finish. The simple lines with their Nordic appeal can be enjoyed indoors or out. The reversible design rests on any flat surface or can be wall-mounted. The raised “fireplace” holds a regular tea light that warms the heat resistant science-lab test tube. Let nature’s scents infuse well-being into your living space by adding a few drops of essential oils to the crushed stones or fill the glass chimney with water and natural botanicals.

ConcreteryTM Collection

The original stale bread bowl trencher did not fare well at sea, so carved trenchers were used by the crew. The square shape was adopted to maximize the space at tables and is said to be the origin of the expression: “three square meals”. A fusion of concrete and ceramics, we explored the qualities of both to create a unique mix that holds heat or cold, and possesses a food-safe, glazed surface. Our trencher takes a modern approach to old world tableware. A platter used for serving and dining for one or to share with others.
