all a board

August 11, 2013

It's a beautiful evening and I just finished going through the pictures from the makers cutting board workshop from Thursday night. So with a nice fresh cup of coffee beside me and the birds chirping in the trees I'm all set to reminisce while lounging on our everyday chairs on the front porch.

After each workshop Steve and I both feel like we've just been to a great party and this workshop was filled with a gathering of merry folk who were ready to have a full out creative time.  Just how we like our visitors :)

Do you see all those belt sanders!!! Yes we've added another 4 to our makers tool inventory, so now every maker has their own to use!!! And trust me... I know they were all thankful that they didn't need to do all the sanding manually. I think I might start adding..."the makers workshop and workout", because they were all sweating by the time they were done buffin up their boards.

When the makers arrived we headed out back to 3 large tables topped with boards in various hardwoods and sizes for them to choose from.  Once they picked "the one", we headed back into the studio and went over the equipment and outline for the adventure they were about to embark on. First stage was clamping down the boards to the work benches and....

There was alot of heavy duty sanding going on and when that was done the makers moved onto sketching up any details they wanted to add to their boards and fine hand sanding.  For added inspiration we have pictures of cutting boards to browse and templates for them to use that offers different handle shapes and various sizes of holes from our bit collection.

After all the sanding, sanding and more sanding and then detailing of the boards the studio was swept up and set up for everyone to wipe down and de-dust their wood. We left them to dry and headed inside to have a well deserved break and enjoy another beautiful evening out back with samples from the tasters menu.

With all the summer harvest in abundance it's hard to decide what to create! There is so much fresh and available at this time of year.

Bowls of summer corn soup with a drizzle of a spicy roasted red pepper, jalapeno and zucchini dressing heated up the makers palettes.  Fresh baguettes and tarragon olive flat bread could be topped with ricotta cheese and bruschetta..(very garlicky, maybe that's why the mosquitoes didn't seem as bad that night?), a selection of salamis and olives...very alfresco.

For dessert, white chocolate lemon and goji truffles, chocolate hazelnut truffles and pavlova topped with a grilled peach sprinkled with cinnamon and then garnished with a spiced blueberry sauce and a dollop of whip cream.

After everyone was rejuvenated we completed the finishing touch to the boards...seasoning.  It never seizes to amaze me how adding a little coconut oil and beeswax glorifies the natural beauty and grain in each piece of wood.

Enjoy the rest of the transformations.

To our makers, wow did you ever see it!
